Mission/Core Values

Our Mission:

The Center for Structured Literacy at the University of Akron exists to equip and apprentice educators in the science of reading and structured literacy through the translation of the latest scientific research. We train educators to make data-driven decisions and apply evidence-based strategies to support all students, including those with learning differences.

Core Values:

• We are committed to the child. Every child deserves a literacy teacher that can provide effective instruction and support their specific needs.
• We are committed to the teacher – both pre-service & practicing. Beginning with teacher preparation, teachers deserve high-quality, hands-on training with effective support and actionable feedback.
• We are committed to the science. We start from the importance of the structure of the language & current reading science, but are always working to translate the most updated science in the field reading for educators.
